Hedge shears have an easily adjustable nut to maintain shear blade tension.

Hedge shears are designed for regular hedge maintenance tasks. Manual shears offer cleaner cuts and great precision and control for detailed trimming, shaping and topiary work. The allow precise cutting results that are difficult to achieve with powered shears/trimmers.

Manual hedge shears have a simple design, easy to maintain and clean and the shear blades are easy and quick to sharpen when compared with power shears/trimmers

Note that if you are dealing with hedges and other plants that have not been pruned for some time you will require loppers/pruning saws or more powerful trimmers. In these situations manual hedge trimmers can be used as a secondary tool alongside powered equipment for final detail, shaping and tidying up work. 

Hedge shear maintenance

Nishigaki hedge shears have hardened carbon steel blades, ideal for maintaining a sharp cutting edge however, they will rust if not cleaned and dried after use.

Remove all plant material - use a mixture of oil and methylated spirits to clean and remove any plant sap. The methylated spirits helps break down the sap, the oil will lubricate and provide a protective coating. Check for sap and debris buildup around the central bolt.

Check the tension on the central bolt to ensure it is not loose i.e. no right angle movement between the hedge shear blades. And not so tight that the blades do not move across each other without some effort i.e. the blades should just glide across without any gape between them.

After drying and cleaning, store trimmers in a dry area.
