Characteristics of Japanese Pruning Saws

Japanese pruning saws stand out as they are designed to cut on the pull stroke, making them more efficient and precise than Western style push saws. Their thin, flexible blades, combined with hard, sharp teeth and a pulling action, require less force and produce exceptionally clean, chip-free cuts. This design is ideal for intricate work, accessing tight spaces, and making precise cuts in various wood types, from watery green wood to hard materials.

Key characteristics:

• Pull-cutting action: Unlike Western saws, which cut on the push stroke, Japanese saws predominately cut when pulled, utilizing the body's muscles more efficiently and allowing for greater control. The 'pull' action is particularly efficient and effective when cutting overhead branches or when using a pole saw, producing a more powerful cutting action on the down stroke.
• Thin, flexible blades: The pull-cutting action puts the blade in tension, allowing for a very thin and flexible blade. This removes less material, requiring less effort from the user and resulting in narrower, cleaner cuts.
• Hardened, sharp teeth: Japanese saws are known for their hard, sharp steel teeth, which stay sharp for a very long time and provide a smooth, precise cut without crushing the wood fibers. The set of the teeth are designed to create a kerf (width of the cut) slightly wider than the blade, helping to prevent the saw from jamming.
